Abstract:

Gender accounts for differences in linguistic behavior; thus, there are certain characteristics that define male speech. In Filipino society, males are perceived to be the dominant gender, so culture dictates that men take the authoritative role. Hence, their language is typified as being direct, devoid of emotion, even rough. But it is posited that certain constraints might lead them to modify their speech patterns and behavior. This exploratory study investigates how Filipino male speakers manifest accommodating behaviors in everyday conversations in various contexts.
