Comparative Evaluation Between Smartphone and Conventional ENT Endoscopy Based on a Survey among Otorhinolaryngologists in Metro Manila

Abstract:

Introduction: Smartphone ENT endoscopy ushered in a new era in outpatient evaluation in the Philippines in the past decade. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare conventional (traditional) ENT endoscopy (CE) and smartphone endoscopy or SE (using couplers to attach to rigid fiberoptic scopes to cellular phones). Methodology: This cross-sectional study was based on a survey of 44 Otorhinolaryngology consultants and residents in Metro Manila based on the following: clarity of image, diagnostic accuracy, ease of use, eye-hand coordination and costs including feedback on advantages and disadvantages of SE. Results: The study showed that CE was more preferred by the respondents compared with SE with regards to clarity of image, eye hand coordination, diagnostic accuracy and ease of use. However, based among respondents with >5 years of practice, SE and CE were comparable in terms of clarity of image and ease of use. Conclusion: Smartphone endoscopy is portable, handy, cheap, accessible, with easy recording of file, retrieval and transfer. Eighty four percent (37/44) recommended the use of SE to ENT clinicians. The study showed the potential of SE as an alternative, versatile, and affordable mode of ENT endoscopy. The proponents recommend the survey to be conducted in a larger population.
