Abstract:

This study aimed to improve the health status of the power transformers of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines in order to have an uninterrupted service for their customers who are the consumers of electricity. The problem was identified through an interview with one of their principal engineers. The researchers came up with three alternative solutions to the identified problem and they were: introduction of new insulating oil, real time monitoring using infrared cameras, and using microcontroller-based cooling system. Criteria were set to provide guidelines in choosing the best solution on how to extend the life expectancy of the power transformers of NGCP. Analyses on the advantages and disadvantages of each solution were done in order to choose the best alternative solution for the problem. Economic study was also done to know the economic viability of the project. Consolidating all the results, the researchers found the introduction of new insulating oil to be the best alternative among the three solutions.
