Abstract:

This paper aimed to prevent the corrosion of pipes in the exhaust of alkali fumes in the pre- treatment area in Union Galvasteel Corporation. The deterioration of the pipe leads to leakage of alkali fumes to the atmosphere that affects the depletion of the ozone layer. Also, it may cause serious problems to human health. This paper showed three possible alternative solutions in preventing the corrosion of pipes. First was the installation of a stainless steel 316L pipe. This will serve as the main pipe and will replace the existing material. Second was the installation of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) as a protective coating for mild steel pipe. The GFRP material will help protect the mild steel from the atmospheric substances that increase the rate of corrosion. Lastly was the installation of zinc - coating and anti - corrosion tape. Like the application of alternative number two, this alternative solution will also protect the pipe from atmospheric substances that increase the rate of corrosion. These changes in the present setup will greatly help the corrosion problem that the company is experiencing. After studying the data further, the proponents forwarded the following recommendations. Union Galvasteel Corporation should consider the innovative materials which are found in the proposed best alternative solution. Stainless steel 316L is one of the best materials to be used when dealing with corrosion problems. It may be costly but, with its durability and material life expectancy, it outstands the alternatives. By choosing the best alternative solution, the company will enjoy the lowest payback period and the highest rate of return. Also, the economic competency of the solution should be considered.
