Palliative Care: An Emerging Role

Abstract:

Palliative Care is an approach that improves the quality of life of the patients and their families who are in a crisis of lifethreatening illness. Palliative care is a worldwide need, despite of that, it is rarely known. The public awareness together with the healthcare providers, their knowledge in palliative care was low and need some improvement. The researchers sought to answer the 1) demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender, educational attainment and family monthly income, 2) level of awareness of the respondents in five (5) selected barangays at the City of Cabuyao about palliative care, 3) the needs of the patient in rendering palliative care, and 4) the significant difference in the level of awareness of the respondents in five (5) selected barangays at the City of Cabuyao on palliative care when they were grouped according to their demographic profile, and 5) the significant difference in the needs of the patient in rendering palliative care in five (5) selected barangays at the City of Cabuyao when they were grouped according to their demographic profile. The Descriptive method was used in this study. The self-made survey questionnaire was the main instrument that was used. The study was conducted in five (5) selected barangays at the City of Cabuyao, Laguna. Random sampling method was used with 251 respondents. Frequency and Percentage, weighted mean, and analysis of variance was used in the study. The level of awareness of the respondents assessed as low having 1.535 and the respondents in terms of prioritizing the needs of the patients in rendering palliative care scored as High having 4.516. There was a significant difference in the level of awareness and in the needs of the patient in rendering palliative care of the respondents in five (5) selected barangays at the City of Cabuyao when they were grouped according to their demographic profile. From the findings and conclusions of the study, the researchers recommend for the future researchers to conduct further study on emerging role of palliative care at the City of Cabuyao to assess the level of awareness and also to improve the knowledge of the community in palliative care and implementing palliative care program and institution at the City of Cabuyao.
