Michel Foucault on the Care of the Self

Mark Anthony P. Canios

Discipline: Philosophy

Abstract:

The phrase “care of the self” can be accomplished in different ways. One can go to the gym in order to stay physically fit or have a regular routine of exercise like jogging, hiking, or any other sports. Another way one can take care of the self is through having that positive outlook and disposition in life in the face of adversities and trials. One can also take care of the self by taking in healthy supplements and healthy diet for the well being of the body and thus, for the self. Hence, the ways of taking care of the self are so varied.

The list can go on and on. Yet the phrase “care of the self” as Michel Foucault has examined means something more aside from staying physically, mentally or emotionally fit. The origin of the principle of the “care of the self” dates back a long way to early civilization.
