The Spiritual Quest on Campus: Religious Practice at De La Salle University

Brother Edward Baldwin

Discipline: Religion, Cultural Studies

Abstract:

During the 70 years of its existence, De La Salle University has regularly insisted upon the high priority to be given to the students' growth in religious knowledge and the practice of their faith. The group of nine pioneer Christian Brothers who arrived in Paco in March, 1911, under the direction of Brother Blimond, FSC, possessed a clear understanding of their primary objective in establishing this new foundation: To give a Christian education to boys. These nine men, who had come from such diverse parts of the world as France, Chile, and New York City, were certainly familiar with the words of the Church's official approbation given to the Christian Brothers by Pope Benedict XIII in 1724, stipulating the main purpose of the congregation.
