Learning from Experiences: Lessons from Teachers’ Stories

MARIA ANTONIA CRUDO-CAPILI

Discipline: Education

Abstract:

Teachers learn from their experiences. Each experience is defined by a specific emotion. This emotion serves as a self-assessment mechanism which allows the teachers to evaluate their values and belief system. The emotion acts as a triggering system which drives teachers to reinvent themselves.

In their stories teachers see their work in terms of their students. There seems to be an umbilical cord connecting the teachers to their students, hence, teachers are not able to separate themselves from their students.

These findings reveal that teaching is a redemptive process. The varied and complex emotions brought about by the experience as well as the teachers’ interconnectedness with the students are the tools teachers use to free themselves from the bondage brought about by the unpleasant emotions they experience in school.Â
