THE COMING OF THE SPANIARDS TO ILOCOS
After a successful expedition by which he subdued the Tagalog provinces, Juan de Salcedo, only twenty two years old, returned to Manila and presented himself to explore Northern Luzon.1 His intention was to find the limits of the place and to discover a shorter passage to Mexico.2 For this purpose he brought from Mindoro, or Mainit as it was then named, some 8 armed boats (navios) with 45 soldiers.3 He sailed from Manila on May 20, 1572, bound northward to pacify the Iloko region or Samtoy.4
