Abstract:

In the play entitled Kastilyo ni Margarita, staged by Culture and Arts Department in fulfilling its mission of nurturing Filipino values and Dominican traditions to the students and employees of Letran Calamba, the researchers determined if the said department was able to present those values and traditions to their audiences and if its audience were able to perceive the messages that the department wanted to communicate.

Using qualitative approach, the researchers used Transformational Model of Comprehension, the ability of the reader to respond, interact, and transform the knowledge gained from reading to conduct the Three Level Taxonomy of Comprehension (literal, inferential and critical). The theme of the play was analyzed through focus group discussion.

Analysis revealed that the Culture and Arts Department was efficaciously able to perform its mission. The values of reaching out to help people, contentment with what one has, having faith in God were specified as the dominant morals which found basis on Filipino values, Dominican tradition and the Letranite’s Code of Honor.
