MAKING AN ADJUSTMENT: A CONVERSATION ANALYSIS ON THE COMMUNICATION REPAIR PATTERNS BETWEEN PROFESSOR AND STUDENTS DURING ACADEMIC CONSULTATIONS

Abstract:

This research is a conversation analysis of three academic consultations between a professor and three Mechanical Engineering students from Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba. In the light of Communication Accommodation Theory, the focus was put on the patterns that emerged from the conversation analysis features: discourse management, repair and its types, strategies and sequences and turn-taking, executed by both speakers in the conversation. The data analyzed consisted of 1,037 repairs which occurred in a total duration of 3 hours and 9 minutes of academic consultations. The findings of the study indicated that the professor and students utilized the following signals of repair: expansion, misunderstanding, hesitation, repetition, and replacement.
