Abstract:

School achievement is one of the many factors that prompt student reading. Reading is a very important skill for survival and success in the academe. The voluminous academic requirements in college demand intensive reading; thus, students must be equipped with complex reading skills for them to comprehend the array of reading materials they encounter in their respective learning courses. The researchers believe that “If the students learn to love reading, then it will be easy for them to hone other skills towards becoming “independent learners”. Based on the study, the most common reasons of
reading engagement are of curiosity and/or involvement. Students also read because they find the characters and the story intriguing, adding excitement on their curiosity to what will be the end part of the story. They engage in reading because they can find themselves with the characters on the story. Majority read for the information required by their academic subjects. After the implementation of the intervention, the researchers discovered that establishing a strong foothold in reading is vital on the student’s learning capacity and has a direct impact on their academic performance and output. During the assessment period where students were tasked to do reports and individual writing exercises, and even in quizzes and other academic related activities, we found out that they became more focus, engaged and they can now integrate several real life examples and other academically related situations that they got from reading books, newspapers and the like.
