Evaluation of theories used in destination sustainability research

Jianwei Qian | Rob Law

Abstract:

Theory is the basis of research design and implementation. Current tourism studies mix the use of theories and even misuse them. Ten articles on destination sustainability are chosen to evaluate the theory used in this type of research. The seven types of theories identified by Smith et al. (2013) are clarified. The major themes of these articles and the pattern of the use of theory are examined. Suggestions for future research are also offered.
