Green Practices of Accommodation and Lodging Establishments in the Capital Town of Siquijor Province, Philippines

Abstract:

The hospitality industries strive to be more environment-friendly and responsible nowadays. Many hotels are now using Green Mark rating scheme to signify audaciously their involvement in the trending greening phenomena. Embracing green practices is not only a cost-saving undertaking but also a wise utilization of world’s depleting resources and exhaust the tradition of reusing, recycling and reducing. This study aimed at determining the green practices of the local accommodation and lodging establishments in Siquijor. This descriptive research probed green practices in the housekeeping and kitchen departments of the 11 establishments employing survey questionnaire based on Modified Best Environmental Practices (BEP) for hotel industry (Sustainable Business Associates). Four categories were boldly included namely water efficiency and conservation, energy efficiency, solid waste minimization and environmental purchasing. It was found out that there are evident green practices among the local establishments in Siquijor town but such has to be sustainable and owned continuous improvements must be considered.
