Rosalyn Carreon Pantaleon | Franco G. Pantaleon

Abstract:

This study assessed the resource and ecological condition of Bislig Bay in the four coastal barangays of Lawigan, Labisma, Tumanan, and Caguyao. Te ecological assessment of mangroves and seagrass adopted the descriptive method of the Participatory Coastal Resource Assessment Manual Guide 2004. Coral reef assessment used the Line Intercept Transect Method. Te physical, chemical, and microbiological water quality were assessed with reference to Department
Administrative Oder No. 34 Series of 1990. The sedimentation rates of rivers were also assessed. Results of the study revealed that mangroves are in excellent but disturbed condition, seagrass is in fair but highly disturbed condition, corals are in poor and highly disturbed condition. Results of water quality parameters revealed an indication of high concentration of bacteria, nutrients, and pollutants. Results revealed that the sedimentation rates of rivers are way below the threshold value to affect the health conditions of mangrove, seagrass, and corals. The results revealed strong evidences that the ecological and resource condition of Bislig Bay is in a disturbed condition that needs Coastal Resource Management Development Interventions.
