Assessment of the Cross-Cultural Skills of Tertiary Teachers of a Private Higher Education Institution

Serena Corbeta- Gomez | Nilda Perez- Magallon

Abstract:

This study determines the self-assessment of tertiary teachers (86) on their cultural skills as well as the assessment of the international students (72) on the cross-cultural skills of their teachers using survey and interview as data collection methods. The study shows that the students rated teachers’ cross-cultural skills as good while the teachers’ assessment is very good. Test of significance shows that the difference between the teachers’ rating and international students’ rating is significant. Qualitative data shows that the “good” rating of students may be due to teachers’ use of the same teaching approach regardless of the diverse culture of students and continuous use of Tagalog as medium of instruction.
