MEDIA PORTRAYAL OF REALITY TELEVISION SHOW PINOY BIG BROTHER: ITS INFLUENCE TO THE YOUTH

Abstract:

The way networks portray reality TV shows can have an impact on the televiewers. The Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teen Edition 4 reality TV show is very popular and watched by viewers of different ages. PBB housemates are portrayed competing in challenges where they employ whatever means it takes to win in order to achieve individual popularity and prize. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the influence of media portrayal of reality TV show PBB to the youth. Specifically, it aimed to ascertain the relationship between the levels of perception of media portrayal of PBB and the level of their influence to the youth. This is a descriptive-correlation study between media portrayal of reality TV shows and the level of its influence to the youth. A validated and reliability-tested researcher-made questionnaire was used in measuring the variables of the study. Quota sampling was used in choosing the respondents coming from the different programs of the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC). The results of the study revealed that the level of influence of PBB to the youth, in terms of vanity and social interaction is High. Furthermore, there is a weak positive significant relationship between the perception of media portrayal of reality TV shows and the level of influence towards the youth in terms of vanity and social interaction.
