Emotional Intelligence: Illuminating its Distinctive Characteristics among Students of OFW Parents

Pamela Louis Fabela Marban | Eleanor Yap Buot

Abstract:

Progress in economy does not prevent Filipino parents from working abroad and making the difficult decision of leaving their children to relatives, a situation that leads these children to experience problems related to self-awareness, self-expression, and management of emotion or what is known as emotional intelligence (Lucero 2015). Emotional struggles are more evident during adolescence, which is a stage of physical and social changes. Adolescents experience emotional problems and yearn for more social support and attention from parents (Packard 2007).
