Abstract:

Media industry managers were asked using a researcher-made questionnaire to assess the skills of media communication graduates who were newly hired by their company. Eight skills were assessed, namely communication skill, teamwork, problem-solving skill, initiative and enterprise, planning and organization, self-management skill, technology skill and learning skill. Of the eight skills, three were rated very good. These are communication skill, teamwork and learning skill while five were perceived to be good. The skills which were found to be wanting among the graduates are problem solving skill, initiative and enterprise, planning and organization, self-management skill and technology skill. This study implies that the graduates from the perspectives of the media practitioners are not yet fully equipped with the skills needed in the highly competitive and dynamic industry.
