Leading the Machos: Female police officers in Context

Abstract:

This phenomenological study aimed to identify and describe the leadership behaviors drawn from the experiences of female police officers in leading their macho subordinates. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the data gathered were transcribed, coded, categorized and analyzed. There were ten participants for the in-depth interview and ten participants for the focused group discussion who came from Regions 10, 11 and 12. Based on the findings, the participants displayed different leadership behaviors brought about by their desirable and undesirable involvement in leading such as in dealing with their functions, gender and authority/leadership related experiences. The participants also revealed that their traits in terms of people orientedness, open-mindedness and reasonableness were developed/enhanced by the said experiences which convinced others of their possession of female police officers intelligence, competence, passion and ability to lead.
