This study aims to describe the challenges of graduate students in thesis writing and as locus-of-hope for educational advancement as experienced in the graduate programs of different colleges and universities in Davao City. A qualitative research design was utilized using phenomenological approach. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews on challenges encountered in thesis writing situations, of wants graduate school students as they go through the process. The results disclosed four themes and these were based on their narration of their feelings and experiences on how they get started to write, with the provision of intervention, encouraging collaboration and participation. Specifically, common answers among the participants that challenged them include their being reluctant to enroll again in thesis writing subject and burdened and wary to write thesis; completing academic requirements only for salary adjustment without finishing the course; reviewing English grammar and not in the contents; and facing financial problems. Further analysis revealed that those challenges and difficulties in thesis writing were converted into a locus-of-hope to achieve their goals, reinforce positive emotion, encourage and support by the colleagues, subject de loading, promotion to a higher position, decision to push through with it, merit increase, research dissemination and publication after thesis defense, and finally call for celebration.
