Samsia I Tilendo

Abstract:

Corn is a staple food for the Filipino families. The study aimed to determine the corn production practices in the province of Maguindanao. The study used the descriptive survey. Seed preparation and seed selection were based on the personal choice of the respondents where they have no idea on how to maintain the seed purity. Most of the farmer respondents have no knowledge on the germination test also on moisture content determination. For the production practices of corn farmer respondents, most of them were using hybrid corn seed and preferred yellow hybrids. They used a conventional method of farming, and plowed their field twice. They planted corn at 2-3 seeds per hill using the manual method of controlling weeds. Use of inorganic fertilizers was very common among farmer respondents, harvest their crops manually, dried their corn products under the heat of the sun and stored their seeds inside the bags or sacks. Technological practices of corn farmers in seed preparation and production are not enough due to lack of information and knowledge about seed technologies and seed production. The corn farmer production income was low. Post-harvest handling was not properly given due attention especially on drying and proper storage of their products.
