Abstract:

This paper attempts to identify the different areas of contributions made by the Augustinian Recollects in the establishment of Cagayan de Misamis. Primary sources obtained from the Archivo Recoleto, as well as secondary sources from different libraries, were utilized to reconstruct specific events that led to the growth and development of this region. The specific time frame of this study is from 1622-1898, the year 1622 being the arrival of the Augustinian Recollects in Cagayan, and the year 1898 being the time of their withdrawal right after the Spanish Government in Manila was defeated. Since the time frame is very broad, the research highlights only the significant events that had contributed to the development of the region. As a conclusion, the research classifies the contributions made by the Augustinian Recollects to the growth and development of Cagayan de Misamis in the following: reducción; military contributions; visitas; political influence; education; and religious.
