Abstract:

The daily life activities of the Tausugs are greatly influenced by their traditions. They go on parrang sabil if their traditional belief is besmirched by others, particularly by the kapil (unbelievers of Islam). The Tausugs “… waged Jihad only for the defense of Islam, the dignity of the people, and the territorial integrity of a given Muslim country…” (Bara 1998, 68). This paper is based on the excerpts of the analysis of the four Tausugs kissa sung narratives linked to reality by Tausug singers. Oral traditions on parrang sabil which actually happened and observed by the people in Jolo and Tapul. It explains the parrang sabil of the Tausugs against the abusive acts of the Spanish soldiers, refusal to accept American reforms which they believed were against their traditions, unjust decision of the Sultan for defending the Chinese, and the Panglima’s unjust decision and rejecting court order for arrest. Kissa on parrang sabil is a good support to clarify some facts not mentioned by some writers in writing Philippine History. The singers of kissa based their singing on the factual information of the actual situation of events as observed by persons telling the story who actually participated in the events. That is why the events, places and the participation of persons involved are mentioned.
