The making of the successful Filipino nurse leaders

This study was a qualitative research utilizing the classical grounded theory approach resulting to a framework of competencies for Filipino nurse managers generated through the development of a theory drawn from information and symbolism surrounding successful nursing leadership. The study revealed that the leadership competencies deemed essential for successful Filipino nursing leadership are people management skills, strong theoretical, conceptual, and practical foundations gained through formal schooling and significant clinical experience, financial and operational management skills, role-modeling, mentoring, leadership credibility and authority, excellence, and quality improvement. The present challenges in the Filipino nursing workplace include staffing concerns, operational mishaps and problems, generational gap among nurses, high nurse turnover, and patient handling issues. Successful nursing leadership in the Filipino setting was defined through rearing the next generation of nurse leaders, operational efficiency, excellence in service, upholding institutional vision-mission, leaving a legacy within the institution, gaining positive influence among subordinates and peers, and attaining organizational, personal, and unit goals. The achievement of successful nursing leadership in the Filipino setting is a multi-tiered, multi-faceted process, hampered by numerous challenges which entail undergoing a tedious process of intrinsic and extrinsic development and assumption of many roles and competencies.
