Alona Jumaquio Ardales

Abstract:

The paper aims to describe a lakeshore community along Laguna de Bay that experiences flooding. The frame for analysis was based on the five assets of Sustainable Livelihood Framework to present a holistic perspective on living conditions of people experiencing a prolonged flooding in their local community. A survey was conducted among 150 households and supported by data from archival research and informal conversations with some local residents. It was discovered that 48% of the population are children, 66% of household heads do not have a permanent job, only 6% finished college education, houses are made of light and salvaged materials, and people are not organized to be involved in the political process of relocation. It is imperative for the Philippines to address disaster related problems especially prolonged flooding due to its drastic effects on daily lives of people in the community.
