DIETARY AND EXERCISE PRACTICES AND PERCEIVED BARRIERS IN FOLLOWING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Jhanrol M. Pascual | Mary Grace O. Domingo

Abstract:

The study was conducted to assess the dietary and exercise practices, and perceived barriers in following a healthy lifestyle of Grade 10 students from the different public secondary schools in Aglipay, Quirino. The main instrument used in gathering data was a survey questionnaire. Data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, t-test and ANOVA. The population was young, dominated by female and with selfemployed parents. Majority ate three regular meals in a day. Some drunk milk but not regularly and ate lean meat twice or thrice a week. Eating noodles, canned goods and street foods was observed. Fried foods were popular in meals. Most students ate vegetables daily. Only few were engaged in exercises which were moderate in strength. Exercises were done to obtain good health but many failed to do it due to lack of time. Majority had little knowledge about good nutrition and the negative effects of poor nutrition. Some of the dietary and exercises were influenced by students’ profiles. Promotion of Nutrition Information, Communication and Education (NICE) to effect awareness and regular implementation of good dietary practices and exercises practices among Grade 10 students in school and at home was highly recommended.
