JEHU JADDAI BARYON A. VILLAPANDO

Abstract:

The researcher focused on exploring Vengeance and Retribution's themes in the novel “ The Count of Monte Cristo” by French author Alexandre Dumas. The researcher seeks to explore how a man feels when he desires vengeance and retribution, what actions that man takes under these feelings, what effects were induced by such action that man takes under these feelings, what effects were induced by such actions, and whether these brought him satisfaction or remorse. Also, it is worthwhile to explore human nature under the influence of raging vengeance and heated retribution. Lastly, the researcher wants to find out if harboring vengeance is needed for self-destructive. The researcher utilized Literary Approach in making the analysis of the material. The study used the Psychoanalytic Approach to expound the contents of the study further. Upon finishing the research, the following conclusion was formed: Several aspects can be considered the cause of one person to commit vengeance. Vengeance and retribution are done with the intent of punishing the original transgressor. Therefore, any action done by the revenant is not bound by anything or is not limited by any restrictions as long as he deemed his actions to befitting punishment to the transgressor in question. It could be any action, murder being the most common as long as the goal is to punish. Lastly, the consequences of the protagonist’s action led to different results and differing impacts on his side. Based on the findings, the researcher thereby recommends that everyone must realize that all people are susceptible to vengeance and retribution, and if one wishes to avoid the consequences of such, then do the most sensible thing: a person must do his best not to antagonize anyone, intentionally or unintentionally.
