Abstract:

In this present generation, a phenomenon in social networking sites has emerged that affects language use. This is through the integration of a word or phrase preceded by a symbol called hashtags. These are used to categorize content and topics on Twitter and other social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. This study focused on identifying and analyzing a broad range of communicative functions served by hashtags. It further explained the relationship of hashtags as a communicative marker in social media and deemed to describe the patterns that occurred on it. Moreover, the approach used examined meanings and patterns that could be manifested or latent in hashtags. Each hashtag has its scheme of text and patterns. The study concluded that nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions are the reoccurring schemes of text in hashtags’ composition. Its pattern depended upon the intended meaning of the post and the function used in it. The study also came up with initial corpora. The researchers recommend performing a different kind of study to frame new meanings and provide strong clues to the operations of hashtags. Also, they suggest that teachers may incorporate hashtags in activities of students done on the internet.
