SPORTS MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS OF COACHES IN THE SCHOOLS DIVISION OF LIPA CITY

Abstract:

This study described the sports management and leadership skills of coaches in the Schools Division of Lipa City, as assessed by the sports coordinators and coaches. The study respondents include 72coaches from the research locale, which covers the public elementary schools in the Division of Lipa City. The time frame of the study is inclusive of the school year 2018-2019. Descriptive research was used since it aims to determine the sports management and leadership skills of coaches. The questionnaire was used as the main data-gathering instrument. It includes three parts, the first of which focused on the school profile of the respondents. This includes the performance of the school in the different meet, availability of sports facilities and source of fund. The second part is on sports management practices of the coaches. This includes planning, organizing, controlling, leading, budgeting, and evaluating. The third part is on the different leadership skills of the coaches. The research revealed that most of the schools have the source of funds and sports facilities and equipment but failed in terms of performance due to organizing manifested in selecting athletes based on the result of physical fitness or battery test. This means that the coaches in the Schools Division of Lipa City are assessed to be of great extent in planning as a sports management practice. The coaches were further assessed to have a very great extent in identifying the strength of the athletes but least manifestation on developing activities suitable for the athletes and providing varied activities for the development of the skills of the athletes.
