THE PARADOX BEHIND NOVELTY ILOCANO SONGS

Miriam C. Reniedo | Eleanor C. Macapal

Abstract:

Filipinos are fond of music, as shown by well-known Filipino musicians of different genres. As such, novelty songs are music listened to by all ages. Hence, this study aimed to determine the values and traits of the Ilocanos as reflected by their perspectives and views in patronizing identified novelty Ilocano songs. The study utilized a qualitative descriptive method employing interactive interviews in eliciting responses from the participants. The study's findings revealed five themes of Ilocano tendencies and inclinations reflective of their values and traits. These are: 1) having a positive outlook; 2) the need to tell what is left unspoken; 3) seeing perfections in imperfections; 4) the need for reminder intervention, and 5) placing the welfare of children as the top priority. This study's findings affirmed that despite the dynamism of culture, Ilocanos of Quirino were still identified through the values and traits-- characteristics of Ilocanos in general. These values and traits are known as bain (shame), panagdayaw (proper respect for the sensitivities of others), alumiim (figuring out how others will react), and close family ties. Thus, with these findings, it is suggested that further content analysis and reflection on the identified Ilocano songs be undertaken to validate the core values that influence Ilocanos to behave in any situation. Finally, the PLGU may also develop a recognition program for the local composers and singers in the province to recognize their contribution to the local music industry.
