Abstract:

The study was designed to examine the coping resources that influenced participants’ resilience after leaving their abusive partners. Towards this end, data were collected using an in-depth interview with 30 battered Filipino women. The women described their experiences with six (6) coping resources that influenced their ability to overcome the effects of abuse and face the challenges of leaving an abusive relationship: (1) social/institutional support; (2) inner resources; (3) spirituality; (4) love for their children; (5) advocacy work for battered women; (6) legal resources. Implications for counseling practice were also discussed.
