Exploring Digital Intelligence Among Generation Z Learners in Senior High Schools in the City of Makati: Basis for a Faculty Development Program

Abstract:

The study explored the Gen Z’s level of learning vis-à-vis McKenzie’s five learning dimensions described as digital, social, mobile, global, visual, and the impact of specific profile variables of selected students and their teachers on digital intelligence (DQ). Mixed methods of research were undertaken. Research techniques employed were documentary review, a survey of perceptions, interview, focus group discussion (FGD), and tests results were analyzed. Results revealed that the profile of both student-and teacher-respondents may explain manifestations of digital intelligence (DQ). While technology is generally beneficial, the digital nature of students may be perceived differently by their teachers resulting in gaps which affect people’s behavior and attitude towards technology utilization and may pose threats and risks to everyone’s safety and security if not managed intelligently. This disconnect must be addressed to ensure that students’ digital adeptness is balanced with digital intelligence, and teachers are prepared to take the active role in assisting students in developing these skills through an effective Faculty Development Program. In the light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution also known as the Age of Digitalization, unprecedented technological advancement shall be inevitable, and everyone is expected to adapt.
