Abstract:

Quality education can ensure security, welfare, and prosperity of the nation. One of the key factors influencing the quality of higher education is the quality of faculty. In higher education, approaches to teaching are becoming more student-centered, which demands different teaching competencies. Competency for Information Technology (IT) instructors has been an issue since they are hired to teach immediately after graduation from the undergraduate courses when they were only trained for skills not to teach in the undergraduate courses. This study aimed to determine the teaching competencies of IT instructors of HEIs of Surigao City and students’ learning achievement. The questionnaire was organized and finalized based on the idea and experience of the researcher who has been in academe as Information Technology instructor for long years. It was validated by the selected experts in the field of research. The study employs a descriptive-correlational method to determine the significant relationship between the teaching competencies of Information Technology instructors and students’ learning achievement. Data were subjected to statistical treatment as mean, standard deviation and correlation coefficient. The results revealed that students’ level of learning achievement is directly proportional to the degree of teaching competencies of IT instructors. It is recommended that IT instructors of HEIs should always foster enhancement initiatives like upgrading, exploring and developing to sustain themselves with desirable teaching competencies to consistently augment the relative level of the learning achievement of the students.
