Abstract:

Studies have shown that gender prejudices, particularly sexism and homonegativity, decrease overtime. Still, studies regarding ambivalent sexism and attitude towards gays and lesbians show that prejudices still exist and gender males ‘sexism towards the opposite sex is interrelated with their negative attitude towards homosexuals. The study aimed to determine whether there is a significant link between ambivalent sexism and attitude towards gay male sexual orientation of cisgender college men at present time. The researchers administered the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (Glick & Fiske, 1996) and the Component Measure of Attitudes towards Homosexuality (LaMar & Kite, 1998) to 187 self-reported cisgender college males from different cities in the National Capital Region and Bulacan. Correlation analysis revealed that there was no significant relationship between the two variables (r = 0.09, ns). Additionally, the research revealed high mean scores in benevolent sexism and attitude towards gay male sexual orientation. Even though no major link is found between sexism and negative attitude towards gays and lesbians, sexism towards women and homonegativity towards gays was observed among heterosexual college men.
