The Black Nazarene Devotion is a popular Catholic devotion in the Philippines. Its popularity has been receiving polarized critiques and perspectives from various local and international observers pertaining to the notions of religiosity, spirituality and ex-treme devotion. Surrounding discourses and controversies on catholic devotion in gen-eral and the Black Nazarene in particular, allowed the researcher-participant to look into the devotional experiences of the actors in order to develop a critical analysis on how devotional practices and their meanings constitute the definition and redefinition of the Black Nazarene devotion as a catholic tradition of profession of faith.
