This study identified the portraits of Filipino families in selected independent films: 100, Ang Nawawala, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros and Die Beautiful. It specifically analyzed the film elements and compositions to determine how the films were framed using semiotic analysis. The researchers found that the filmmakers have varying styles in producing the films and showcasing the Filipino families in the three independent films. The identified elements and compositions were found effective in depicting the Filipino families. It was suggested that more filmmakers should produce movies about families that have unique characteristics, and those that are remotely different from the ordinary and typical portrayal of Filipino families. Moreover, films should be used as an aesthetic yet an effective way of tackling the country’s social issues.
