Abstract:

This study examined the concept of press freedom and the rights of campus journalists of the Knight publication in Letran Calamba. Using a semi-structured guide question, the researchers interviewed nine (9) editors-in-chief of the Knight publication from batch 2008 to batch 2018. From the data, the researchers extracted a narrative account of the 6 publication years that were covered (2008-2009, 2010, 2012-2013, 2014-2015, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018). This was followed by a list of general themes and sub-themes, grouping them into 3 categories (i.e., the concept and context of press freedom, the status of the publication, and the challenges of the publication). It was revealed that press freedom is inviolable right to express the ideas or beliefs of journalists without the control of anyone. It is a privilege and right as it acquires and shares information without being questioned. In terms of the status of the publication, the publication is in its recuperating stage. The students have an increased awareness on campus journalism, and with good financial management, they are determined to produce and be recognized among others. However, there are also some challenges, such as: media autonomy in publication, members dedication to press work, other needs of the publication, late release, lack of right to voice out, and purpose of the publication. The Knight Publication may use this study as a guideline in practicing their press freedom and in creating and planning the mechanisms for the betterment of the publication.
