Abstract:

The main objective of the study was to assess the athletics and Sports program of Junior High School (JHS) of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba. Specifically, this study opted to determine the perception of the event coaches, ASpO officers, and JHS athletes towards the implementation of the Athletics and Sports program, find out the level of agreement of student athletes and coaches towards the elements of the Athletics and Sports program; and describe the strength and weaknesses of the Athletics and Sports Program to improve its state of implementation. The respondents of the study were the forty (40) Junior High School athletes, 7 event coaches and 1 ASpO sports officer. Statistical treatments included the frequency and percent distribution in presenting the results of the study. The results revealed that the organizers care about the potential skills of the athletes, Letranites or non-Letranites. The act of scouting in different places implies that recruitment is not limited within the Letran community but for those who have the potential to be Letran athlete. However, recruiting highly skilled from the distant provinces was not possible due to budget constraint and the absence of a dormitory for athletes, the dissemination of information takes place through ASpO cascading of the schedule of trainings to the event coaches per team down to the athletes and other members of the team. On the other hand, there is no need to update the bulletin board from time to time to keep the athletes aware of the urgent meetings and trainings; the ASpO officers, event coaches and athletes perceived the program objectives to be achievable and measureable, progressive, planned ahead, and efficiently framed for the athletes’ skill enhancement and improvement; athletes define their coach as a responsible individual capable of training them with compassion and passion for sports. Moreover, the materials and equipment for the training are made available by the ASpO officer. However, equipment may not be substantial and well prepared at times; security is more focus on securing the campus but not the student athletes that are training for their schedule. On the level of agreement towards the elements of sports, the coaches never fail to announce important matters to the JHS athletes, both in reference to scheduling and bulletin board informing. Sports coaches do not make use of social media as venue for announcement; the sports program of the JHS works efficiently in liue of the time of training and in training and drills for specific sporting event; the coaches’ unique strategy in making his/her athletes engage in the process of sports and show passion for the specific sporting event; the coaches respect and value the time of training and the timeframe in order to execute quality sports training among athletes. Likewise, following the schedule for training offers appropriate activity and skill development among athletes; for the coaches, it is important to know that there is a comfort room near the venue of training; and athletes are skilled in terms of first aid that is why the coaches do not believe that first aid personnel is always available when accidents arise. Also, athletes are required to have a practical knowledge of first aid since tournaments require physical power and coordination. Lastly, on the growth and development of athletes, the various events of the athletics and sports program help in obtaining self-confidence, sportsmanship and self-discipline.
