Abstract:

This study explored the lives of persons with disability, their psychological well-being, and the way they deal with stressors. It also determined the factors affecting the psychological well-being of persons with disability, who are employed in city governments and municipality. The study was guided by the theory of Carol Ryff, Six-factor Model of Psychological Well-being, which was inspired by Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics - nature of the good life for a human being. Using a mixed method design, the study obtained the data through Ryff’s Scale of Psychological Well-Being and a semi-structured interview. The results of the analysis showed that most of the participants were in middle adulthood aged 40-65, with more male participants and married couple. The participants had low scores in four out of the six sub-domains (self-acceptance, positive relations, environmental mastery, and personal growth). In sub-domains (autonomy and purpose in life), there was an equal number of participants who got low and high scores. There was no significant difference in the overall psychological well-being of the participants in terms of age, gender, and civil status. In the qualitative part, the researchers concluded that the dominant and the primary theme in dealing with stressors was the problem-focused coping. Notably, the work environmental stressors had an impact to the persons with disability’s psychological well-being, specifically in willingness to develop their own selves. The study about the psychological well-being of persons with disability can be improved through further research and since the participants’ way of dealing with stress is problem-focused coping, the researchers recommended that the government or the company must provide a seminar or forum about problem-focused coping and/or problem-solving skills.
