Understanding the Practices in Antibiotic Usage of Mothers with Children who Underwent Antibiotic Therapy: Inputs for a Health Teaching Guide

Lauren Joy L. Baldevieso | Marie Suzzane L. Batitis

Abstract:

The research aimed to understand the common practices, knowledge and perception of mothers during the course of antibiotic medication of their children. Likewise, this descriptive study hoped to create community awareness through a health teaching guide. Guided by Colaizzi’s (1979) method of analysis, the study revealed two cluster themes about the practices of mothers, and these are knowledge, and attitude and behavior. The common practices of mothers were divided into three scopes: the selection and choice of antibiotics, understanding the indication of antibiotics, and the assessment of their awareness towards antibiotic resistance. Following the Health Belief model, the researchers developed a health teaching guide, which is based on the evaluated practices and knowledge of the respondents.
