Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to investigate students' experiences with posting English captions on Facebook. Its specific goal was to explore students' motivations and barriers to posting English captions on Facebook. A series of semi-structured and in-depth interviews were undertaken. The interviewees for this study were carefully selected sophomore students from Quirino State University's Cabarroguis Campus. The four interesting themes that emerged along the motivations of students are as follows: a) to acquire vocabulary and fluency; b) to express oneself; c) to gain confidence; and d) to influence and inspire others; while the emerging holdbacks of students are as follows: a) poor in spelling and grammar; b) laughing stock in class; and c) bullied by bashers. As a result, further research is required to get a strong view of the precise impacts of social media use on English language acquisition in university settings. Subsequently, with the involvement of more faculty and departments, it is necessary to further investigate the educational use of social media and construct a conceptual model with dependent variables to test the degree of the possible contribution of Facebook, and even other platforms, to the learning process.
