Abstract:
Statistics is a vital subject at the university level. Understanding its
fundamental concepts is critical in conducting research. The study aimed to
evaluate the performance of 54 college students enrolled in Introduction to
Statistics at Quirino State University, Philippines, using the Modular Distance
Learning (MDL) approach during the First Semester, School 2020-2021. At the
start of the semester, students were given modules that included a thorough
discussion of the various topics to help them understand the fundamental
statistical concepts. At the end of each module, a timed online exam was
administered using Google Forms to assess the students' understanding. The
results of the assessments revealed that students did not fully understand the
majority of the concepts, particularly the elucidation of standard deviation,
hypothesis testing and correlation. The analysis and interpretation of data
revealed a higher level of ambiguity. The findings recognized the critical role of
teachers in the teaching-learning process. As a result, the MDL materials should
be improved through the addition of video tutorials or the use of blended learning.
