John Mark Corteza | Nikka Abigail Manalo

Abstract:

The research identified the communication strategies on solid waste management used by MENRO of Los Baños based on the elements of communication, such as; frequency of communication, formality of communication, content of communication, and channels of communication. The usage of communication strategies and the barriers of communication in the implementation of solid waste management were also determined. The researchers interviewed 13 Barangay Chairmen in Los Baños, Laguna, those from Batong Malake, Baybayin, Timugan, Anos, Bambang, Bayog, Lalakay, Maahas, Malinta, Mayondon, San Antonio, Tadlac, and Tungtungan-Putho and a key informant, the Head of MENRO. The head of MENRO indicated that they almost used all communication channels and that their frequency of communication and use of formal communication were effective. Ordinances were the usual content of communication. Verbal communication was more effective than non-verbal communication, especially brochures and fliers. On the other hand, the attitude of the people and the leadership in barangay were the major barriers of communication. The respondents agreed that the indicators on usage of communication strategies on solid waste management were effective. Therefore, the communication strategies used by MENRO on solid waste management based on the use of message, channels, and approaches were effective. The researchers highly recommended to the Municipality of Los Baños to start developing the leadership skills of the barangay leaders that will make them capable and attuned to the demand of implementing laws, policies, programs, and activities and will improve their political decisiveness.
