The Knight Publication and its Challenges in Information Dissemination

Abstract:

This research identified the challenges encountered by The Knight Publication, the official collegiate student publication of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba. The study was conducted using a qualitative research method that described the media utilized by The Knight Publication, process of information dissemination, challenges experienced, and suggestions of the staff that will serve as guide for the organization to develop its improvement plan. Purposive sampling was applied to select the qualified research participants based on the criteria set by the researchers. Nine individuals from the publication, four from the senior editorial board and five from the apprentices, were included in the study. A semi-structured interview guide was devised by the researchers to carry out the focus group discussion held in Letran-Calamba. The data gathered were thoroughly studied using thematic analysis. The results revealed that there were two media being utilized by The Knight Publication, the newspapers and the social media platforms, specifically, Facebook. No newspapers were produced during Academic Year 2018-2019 due to the challenges encountered, such as lack of staff and the conflicting roles, lack of approving body for information gathering and administration, and also lack of time, budget, equipment and materials. Improvement needed included staffing, trainings, and productivity to address the challenges encountered. Studies on journalism and information dissemination should be done by higher educational institutions or even by professional journalists to improve their capabilities and contribute to the betterment of their publications.
