Development of a Standard Rubric to Assess the Essay Writing of Students by Adopting the Core Concepts of Value Rubrics

Erwin Gerard M. Lucela

Abstract:

This study developed a standard rubric by adopting the core concepts of VALUE rubrics to assess the essay writing of the students. Rubrics are designed to evaluate students’ performance and improve their weaknesses. The Senior High School Department of the Colegio had no standard rubrics particularly in assessing their students’ written outputs. This descriptive research interviewed selected Senior High School teachers using a validated interview guide. The study revealed that the senior high school teachers found their students having difficulties in writing essays in English particularly in the areas of vocabulary, grammar, content, and organization. For these, a standard rubric was developed to address these concerns and to help the teachers objectively assess the written outputs of their students.
