This study measured the motivation level of 52 hospital personnel relative to their benefits; determined the top three benefits affecting their work motivation; and investigated the correlation of benefits with work motivation by using the three elements from Vroom’s Expectancy Theory, namely: expectancy, instrumentality, and valence. Descriptive-analytical study was done with 36 nurses and 16 administrative staff of Pamana Medical Center. Data were collected using a validated and reliable survey questionnaire, consisting of two sections: demographic information and questions about level of motivation. Results revealed that most of the benefits offered by Pamana Medical Center were influential on the work motivation of the hospital personnel. Two of the top three most favorable benefits came from discretionary benefits, such as discounts on hospital services and free consultation, while the other one came from statutory benefits, specifically, the 13th month pay. However, despite the motivation derived from most of the benefits, still the overall mean of the twenty benefits were 1.97 interpreted as “Demotivated”. Also, based on the three elements of Expectancy Theory, discretionary benefits were found to have a “moderate correlation” with motivation in terms of expectancy; a “high correlation” in instrumentality; and a “moderately high correlation” in valence. On the other hand, the relationship between statutory benefits in terms of expectancy was found to be in “low correlation”; when it comes to instrumentality, “moderately high correlation”; and in valence, “moderate correlation”. These relationships were statistically significant at the .001 level. In words, the value of benefits significantly affects the motivation of the employees. Findings indicated that Pamana Medical Center’s benefit packages need to be revisited. Given the significant relationship between benefits and work motivation as an index of the employees’ level of motivation towards work, it is necessary to consider the employees’ personal preferences and opinions to reinforce their benefit package, with more emphasis on those with lower ratings.
