Abstract:

This research determined the relationship of work competencies and engagement of the rank-and-file employees of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba for the crafting of a training program for them. The researchers utilized quantitative research design and total enumeration. A self-made questionnaire was constructed on employee engagement based on the model of Dreyfus’s Five Stage Model of adult skills acquisition on work competency variable and Kahn’s model. The study found that there was a significant relationship between Letran Calamba's rank- and-file employees' work competency and engagement. This implies that the employees become more competent as they become more engaged in the workplace. The researchers then concluded that employees who have a high level of work competency may also have a high level of engagement to the organization. Work competencies and employee engagement play a big role in the performance of the employees, helping them to execute quality work in the organization and to build harmonious relationships with one another. The researchers recommended to the employees to concentrate on the specific competencies that need enhancement, like data analysis, reasoning, and mediating disputes, which can help them improve their work performance in the organization. They also recommended the cooperation of employees to the future programs of the Human Resource Department to show their engagement and commitment to the organization, and support the Colegio’s programs and activities for the organization, employees, and its stakeholders. Furthermore, they recommended that the Human Resource Department provide training programs and activities based on the inputs presented in this study to help the employees to become more engaged and competent in the workplace.
