Designing Learning Commons in Academic Libraries

Carmela P. Depano–Panganiban

Abstract:

This study describes the profile of selected academic libraries adopting a learning commons service model. It aims to develop a proposed design of a model learning commons suitable for an academic institution. As a descriptive study, it explored the different components of the learning commons, identified the best practices implemented by academic libraries during the transformation, identified various challenges and obstacles faced during the transition process, and described the main contributing factors that led to the success of the implementation of the learning commons. The study results showed that the elements of a Learning Commons are homogenized, and challenges encountered are quite common, but best practices vary depending on the capabilities, culture, and resources of the libraries and the perception of the respondents.
