Mobile Facilitated Instruction: Self Directed Learning for ALS Life Skills

Abstract:
Alternative Learning System (ALS) must actively assist students to avoid their falling behind in
program participation or failing the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) test. Costs, access, and
learning objectives that conflict with those of other students' interests and obligations are some of the
barriers to learning and program completion in ALS. Thus, this study investigates the challenges in
ALS instructional materials and the use of ICT and smartphones from international to local settings.
The following are the findings of the study: (1) The Mobile Facilitated Instructional Material needs of
the ALS Learners are highly needed and should be centered in containing relevant and detailed
lesson learned at students own pacing. (2) The acceptability level of the developed Mobile Facilitated
Instructional Material in content, layout, and utility aspect is highly acceptable in all aspects and
indicators (3)The students’ pre-test scores increased from did not meet expectations to outstanding in
post-test. (4) There is a significant difference in the students’ scores, before and after the use of the
Mobile Facilitated Instructional Material. (5)The Mobile Facilitated Instructional Material may be
continuously developed for enhancement along the identified needs in Life Skills for ALS
learners. (6) The material may further be tested in bigger number of students with varied contents
and activities. (7)The number of items may be increased as well as the difficulty level following
students identified needs
